Brown v. State Farm: Missouri Court Enforces UM Stacking Limits and ‘Your Car’ Exclusion

Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Stacking in Missouri

In Brown v. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, the Missouri Court of Appeals upheld summary judgment for the insurer, enforcing a UM coverage exclusion that limited stacking to statutory minimums for vehicles not involved in the accident.

Facts: Multi-Vehicle Policies and UM Claim

Mandie Brown insured four vehicles under separate State Farm policies, each with $100,000 in UM coverage. After being struck by an uninsured driver while driving her Toyota Camry, she sought to stack full UM limits across all policies.

State Farm paid $100,000 under the Camry policy and $25,000 each under the remaining three policies, citing a UM exclusion tied to the “YOUR CAR” designation.

Policy Language and Declarations Pages

Each policy's declarations page listed only one vehicle under “YOUR CAR.” The policy booklet and endorsements—including the UM exclusion—were expressly incorporated. The court reiterated that declarations pages summarize coverage but do not independently grant it.

Court's Holding: No Ambiguity

The court rejected arguments that definitions of “Your Car,” “You or Your,” and “Car” were ambiguous. Reading the policy as a whole, the exclusion clearly applied when the insured was injured while occupying an owned vehicle not listed as “YOUR CAR.”

Key Lessons for Insurers and Policyholders

  • Missouri permits UM stacking but allows statutory-minimum limitations

  • Clear exclusions tied to declarations pages are enforceable

  • Courts will not create ambiguity where policy language is consistent

Holding: Summary judgment for State Farm affirmed.
